Durham Research Focus: Immunological and Inflammatory changes in Aging, Cancer in the elderly, bone/fractures diagnosis and management, End of life care, exercise, mobility in aging

The Durham GRECC has been serving elderly Veterans in North Carolina, most of Virginia, and parts of West Virginia since 1984. In fiscal year 2009 staff from the Durham GRECC developed a Shingles Vaccine Clinic for patients in Durham, published 58 peer reviewed papers, provided 750 person hours of geriatric education, and expended $2,174,423 in research awards. Its current research interests include: immune system and inflammation changes and aging; diagnosing and managing bone fractures; infectious diseases and aging; cancer in the elderly; delivering and transitioning to long term care; delivering and transitioning to end of life care; spirituality at end of life; drug related problems and medications in older Veterans; and exercise, mobility, and disability with aging.

Health Services: Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, Evaluation of Geriatric Evaluation and Management Units, health promotion and disease prevention with special emphasis on neoplasia, cardiovascular disease, exercise, nutrition, caregiving issues, geriatric assessment, and appropriate drug utilization.

Education: Conferences, teleconferences, web-based education and workshops which emphasize areas related to the research foci and geriatrics performance measures. Geriatrics education and training includes medicine, nursing, physician assistants and others. GRECC staff  attend geriatric rounds and patient evaluation conferences in VA and the Duke Geriatric Evaluation and Treatment Clinic. The GRECC hosts a Geriatric Medicine and Dentistry Fellowship Program and training Programs in Geriatric Pharmacy, Social Work, Psychology, Nursing, Audiology and Speech Pathology.

Clinical: GRECC activities are closely integrated with the 120-bed Extended Care and Rehabilitation Center and the 8-bed Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) program, a geriatric consultation service, an outpatient GEM program, a primary care geriatric clinic and a gero-oncology clinic. The GRECC also has a fitness and health promotion program called Gerofit and an employee fitness program.
