Syracuse VA Medical Center
The Syracuse VA Medical Center is a University-affiliated teaching and tertiary care facility located at the geographic center of upstate New York. It is located in the heart of Syracuse directly adjacent to the campuses of the State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University and Syracuse University. The Center provides healthcare services to over 40,000 veteran men and women who reside in the 13-county Central New York area.
Sites of Care
The facility opened in 1953, has since been expanded, and is currently operating and supporting eight additional Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) located in Auburn, Binghamton, Carthage, Cortland, Ithaca, Massena, Oswego and Rome. Each outpatient clinic provides both complete Primary Care and Mental Health Programs.
The new VA Behavioral Health Outpatient Center, which will also house the Homeless Program and Vocational/Rehabilitation Programs, will move to its new location at 620 Erie Boulevard West, in Fall 2009.
The Syracuse VA Medical Center also has a Community Care Center located in leased space in Syracuse. The Center houses several outpatient mental health programs to include a Community Day Program and Mental health Intensive Case Management Program and Vocational Services.

There are also nursing student affiliations with University Hospital and the Crouse School of Nursing; Syracuse University for social workers, audiologists, and speech pathologists; Le Moyne College for physician assistants; Union College in Albany for Pharmacy residents; and several universities across the country for psychology interns.
Various sharing agreements exist for which there is collaboration in other areas such as Radiation Therapy, Professional Radiology Services, Sleep Lab, Electron Microscopy, and the Cardiac Catherization Lab.

Community Living Center (CLC) - 48 Beds
- A $78 million 30-bed construction project for a Spinal Cord Injury/Disease Center is underway. Construction begins in Fall 2009. The 6-floor addition will include a therapeutic pool, expansion of the dialysis unit, 8 operating rooms and expansion of outpatient services. Completion is set for December 2011.

The Syracuse VA Medical Center, a tertiary care facility supporting 13 counties, and located in Central New York, provides acute and comprehensive medical, neurological, surgical, oncology, rehabilitation, geriatrics, extended and or long-term care services, and psychiatric inpatient and outpatient care programs. A state-of-the-art Emergency Department is also on site.
In 2005, Syracuse was selected as the VISN 2 preferred site for the Polytrauma Network Site, providing long-term rehabilitative care to veterans and service members who experience severe injuries to the brain, or to more than one organ system. Syracuse also maintains a CARF-accredited inpatient acute rehabilitation unit, an accredited Prosthetic and Orthotic Lab, a driver training program, tele-health capabilities, and a full range of ancillary and clinical resources. Remote tele-psychiatry services are available to the Rome CBOC, as well as to active personnel and dependents from the Fort Drum (10th Mountain Division). Syracuse also houses the recently added Supported Employment Program for veterans with Serious Mental Illness.
