Research Focus:
Basic Biomedical: Neoplasms and Aging; Cardiovascular Disease and Aging
Interaction of aging processes with cancer and cardiovascular disease, including basic research in relevant immunology, biochemistry, molecular and cell biology.
Applied Clinical: Cancer; Cardiovascular Disease; Osteoporosis and Paget's Disease
Patterns of cancer in elderly, exercise for cardiovascular fitness and mobility, stress and hypertension by race and age, reduction of impairments from osteoporosis and Paget's disease of bone, and risk factors for recurrent fractures in men who have sustained hip fractures.
Health Services: Health Promotion and Disease Prevention
Evaluation of Geriatric Evaluation and Management Units, health promotion and disease prevention with special emphasis on neoplasia, cardiovascular disease, exercise, nutrition, caregiving issues, geriatric assessment, and appropriate drug utilization.
Education Focus:
Conferences, teleconferences, web-based education and workshops which emphasize areas related to the research foci and geriatrics performance measures. Geriatrics education and training includes medicine, nursing, physician assistants and others. GRECC staff attend geriatric rounds and patient evaluation conferences in VA and the Duke Geriatric Evaluation and Treatment Clinic. The GRECC hosts a Geriatric Medicine and Dentistry Fellowship Program and training Programs in Geriatric Pharmacy, Social Work, Psychology, Nursing, Audiology and Speech Pathology.
Clinical Focus:
GRECC activities are closely integrated with the 120-bed Extended Care and Rehabilitation Center and the 8-bed Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) program, a geriatric consultation service, an outpatient GEM program, a primary care geriatric clinic and a gero-oncology clinic. The GRECC also has a fitness and health promotion program called Gerofit and an employee fitness program.
