Research Focus:
Basic Biomedical:
Emphasis on molecular mechanisms involved in age-related loss of muscle mass and atrophy, gene therapy approaches to hereditary diseases of muscle, molecular aspects of the decline in steroid hormone production during aging, age-induced alterations in in cellular lipid metabolism and their relevance to obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, investigation of the role immune responses and inflammation in Alzheimer's disease and aging, cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying autoimmune and degenerative arthridities affecting the elderly, cellular and molecular studies of genes that control aging, and investigation of the role metabolic disorders and oxidative stress-induced cell damage in the development of neurodegenerative disease and the aging process
Applied Clinical:
Emphasis on endocrinological and metabolic diseases of the elderly. Improving models of care for cognitive impairment, dementia and late life depression including development of behavioral interventions and evaluating access to resources.
Health Services:
Implementation research developing, implementing, and evaluating methods of quality improvement; medical informatics research in automated clinical knowledge bases and in natural language processing of text in electronic health records; methods for valuing functional status for medical decision-making.
Education Focus:
Education programs are targeted for students, medical residents, fellows, clinical faculty, VA staff, VA patients, and members of the surrounding community. Seminars offered through didactic classroom settings and via electronic means. Conferences sponsored which feature nationally recognized scholars. Communication of information among researchers and geriatric clinicians promoted through lectures and written materials. Joint programs developed in collaboration with Stanford Geriatric Education Center (SGEC). Physician geriatric fellowship program and residency training rotation in geriatrics provided. Geriatric clinical traineeships in social work, psychology, physical therapy and other affiliated health professions sponsored by VA headquarters. Advanced geriatric research fellowship is offered to develop academic and/or health care systems leadership skills. Research fellowship positions are targeted for geriatricians, geriatric psychiatrists, and doctoral level associated health professionals with similar training in geriatrics.
Clinical Focus:
Outpatient clinics which include primary care Geriatrics, interdisciplinary Geriatrics, and Geriatric Consultation clinics. Affiliations with Home Based Primary Care, Palliative Care, Psychology Service, Social Work Service, and Extended Care Services. Areas of emphasis include dementia, depression, falls, caregiver support, and patient-provider communication.
