Appointments are not required

December 7 was the last day of the walk-in flu shot clinic for veterans in the flag atrium. Beginning Monday, Dec. 10, veterans can get a flu shot in their Primary Care clinic.

NOTE: if you receive your primary care at a Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC), please call your CBOC to obtain the schedule.

Although this veteran benefit is provided without charge, travel pay is not available for coming to the Flu Shot Clinic. You may be able to get the flu shot closer to your home from your local county health department for free or a small fee.

The Minneapolis VA recognizes how important it can be for spouses and other caregivers of our veterans also to receive flu shots. This year we have arranged for an outside vendor (Minnesota Visiting Nurse Agency) to offer flu shots to non-veterans on-site only at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center from October 22 through November 2. The vendor will charge $25 for the flu shot.

If the non-veteran is eligible for Medicare Part B and would like to receive a free shot, they must bring their Medicare card, any other insurance card and any voucher received in the mail to the walk-in clinic.

The flu vaccine is safe and effective. Persons with egg allergies should not get a flu shot.
VA physicians strongly recommend that you receive a flu shot each year if any one of the following is true:

you are 50 years of age or older
you see a doctor for another serious medical condition
If you have a condition that effects your ability to breathe, swallow or cough
you have heart disease, lung disease (such as emphysema or asthma), or diabetes
you will be pregnant during the influenza season

In addition, household contacts of persons in these high priority groups as well as healthcare workers are also strongly encouraged to receive an influenza vaccination every year. To learn more about the flu shot see the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations (cdc 2007-08 flu facts )

Veterans are also encouraged to apply for a Veteran Identification Card (VIC) located in Emergency Department, Room 1V 150.
