The focus of GRECC research is on the aging brain with emphasis on Alzheimer's disease. Research conducted by GRECC investigators ranges from molecular and cellular biology and brain functions to studies on caregiving and Alzheimer's patients.
GRECC research is supported by funding from the Department of Veterans Affairs, National Institutes of Health, Alzheimer's Association, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety and corporations.
Clinical research is integrated into the clinical service. Patients seen in the GRECC Dementia Clinic are reviewed in a weekly meeting of the clinical staff and appropriate subjects for research studies are identified.
Clinical research focuses primarily on patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), and includes:
Drug studies with cognitive enhancers and drugs to modify problem behaviors
Behavior modification using applied behavior analysis
Driving safety issues in dementia
Assessment of resource utilization through such programs as the nurse-managed Dementia Care Clinic
Brain imaging studies using PET scanning
Biochemical studies of CSF; and others.
