VA Nursing Practice provides Veteran healthcare across a continuum of services for acute and chronic conditions in hospital, ambulatory, and skilled nursing settings. To improve Veteran access to care, nurses help create new models of care like the Primary Care Patient Aligned Care Teams (VA’s Patient Centered Medical Home), introduce new nursing roles like the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL), and advance existing roles, like the use of RN Care Managers to coordinate care. VA Nurses share lessons learned, tools, and evidence-based practices across the system. They engage in emergency management and disaster preparedness both in VA and beyond. And VA Nurses are integrally involved in the greater federal, national, and international communities of nursing: advocating for informed nursing practice so we can constantly improve nursing care for our nation’s heroes with our nursing colleagues.
- Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL)
- Clinical Practice Program (Field Advisory Committees)
- Emergency Management
- Joining Forces: Enhancing Veterans' Care Teams
The Workforce Management efforts promote policies and national initiatives that create the elements to ensure VA employs the best nursing professionals and personnel to help advance VAs goals for patient driven, safe, effective, high quality care. Some initiatives include:
- TMS Genomics Education for All VA Nurses
- RN Transition to Practice
- VA Nursing Academic Partnerships (VANAP)
- VA Nursing Careers
- VA Travel Nurse Corps (locum tenens)

New VA Nursing Book!
The VA Office of Nursing Services is proud to announce the release of the book, Realizing the Future of Nursing: VA Nurses Tell Their Story. This remarkable compilation of stories and experiences described by 145 VA nurses, physicians, and associated healthcare staff; and community partners in both academia and business, provides an extraordinary view into the nation's largest healthcare system. There are many moving narratives that focus on specific innovations designed to improve the quality and safety of Veteran care from the "headquarters" perspective. In addition, individual VA staff shared their unique experiences from the "field" perspective. Taken together, these create a powerful picture of remarkable commitment and dedication, extreme challenges, and exceptional success.
The 27 chapters contained within this book will provide healthcare executives with a unique road-map for ground-breaking strategic approaches to leadership, communication, evidenced-based practice, academic partnerships, utilizing data to drive improvements and add value, and the development of a team-based, non-traditional, highly adaptable and functional workforce.
The stories told in this book reflect the hard work and dedication of the Veterans Affairs nurses who provide care to our nation’s heroes. Four key messages outlined in the book help explain the important role of VA nurses.
- Key Message 1: Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training;
- Key Message 2: Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression;
- Key Message 3: Nurses should be full partners, with physicians and other health care professionals, in redesigning health care in the United States;
- Key Message 4: Effective workforce planning and policy making require better data collection and an improved information structure.
