IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF DIABETES EYE CARE

David B. Matchar, MD, Co-Investigator

Project Number XNV 21-076 funded by NIH.
September 30, 2003 - August 31, 2007

Project Background

The IOM reports of medical error have energized attention to issues of the quality of medical care. Within eye care for diabetes, our studies show that shortfalls occur in almost all critical areas of process quality of care, such as the use of a stereoscopic exam of the retina.

Project Objectives

The goal of the study is to better characterize the extent and type of error in eye care for patients with diabetes and to measure the effectiveness of structured interventions with community-based general opthalmologists and optometrists to improve both competency and technical process of quality.

Project Methods

We will conduct a randomized controlled trial of two levels of intervention designed to address both technical process quality of care and provider competency.

Project Findings

None at this time.

Project Status

On going.

Project Impact

This study addresses substantive and methodological domains that will further the implementation into everyday practice of efficient methods to measure and improve the quality and effectiveness of care delivered in the community setting.
