Health IT Sharing

"Sharing Expertise to Achieve Common Goals"

What We Do

The Health IT Sharing (HITS) Program directly supports the VA mission and efforts to promote quality healthcare for our veterans and their eligible dependents.  In particular, the HITS Program supports the Veterans Health Administration's (VHA) long range strategy, HealthePeople, which is aimed at working with other public and private sector agencies on a collaborative effort to improve the health of all citizens, including over 25 million veterans. The HealthePeople strategy is primarily focused on: Health IT standards; electronic health records (EHR); personal health records (PHR); and health information exchange (HIE) activities.

Health IT Sharing  involves providing support to the HealthePeople program in the following areas:

  • VA/DoD Health IT Sharing
  • Federal Government Health IT Sharing
  • State Government Health IT Sharing
  • Native American Health IT Sharing
  • Health Community IT Sharing  (Non-Government Organizations)
  • International Health IT Sharing

In May 2004, the VA/DoD Health IT Sharing program area became a separate program within the Health Informatics Strategy office of the VHA Office of Information. For more information go to VA/DoD Health IT Sharing Program .

Our Objectives

  • Participate in a partnership with Department of Defense   (DoD), the Indian Health Service (IHS), and other Federal, State, and local government agencies to define, procure, and implement health information solutions that satisfy common needs.
  • Foster cooperative, collaborative interactions with non-government organizations in the public and private sector on major health information systems initiatives.
  • Better leverage and utilize collective resources of collaborating organizations to acquire or develop health information systems.
  • Help develop standardized processes within VHA and the Office of Information (OI) to facilitate and support health information systems sharing projects and activities.
