Program Mission

The Miami VA Healthcare System Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Treatment Center is a Regional Prosthetic Clinic with a full Orthotic/Prosthetic Lab that receives patients from other VA medical centers. Our mission is to provide specialized patient care by supplying patients with the necessary prescribed prosthetic equipment, sensory aids and devices, as permitted authorizing laws, regulations and policies.

Program Description

The Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Treatment Center provides thousands of different types of medical items, devices and services to our disabled veterans, that are either purchased or fabricated at the center. As a regional primary Automated Fabrication of Mobility Aids (AFMA) site, we provide artificial limb sockets for several other VA Medical Centers. We provide wheelchairs, special seating systems and other mobility aids. The Oxygen Program, in collaboration with Pulmonary, Respiratory and the Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Treatment Center provides home oxygen therapy to veterans in need of this service. Automobile adaptive equipment may be provided to veterans service-connected for loss or loss of use of one or more extremities, or ankylosis of one or both hips or both knees, to allow them to safely operate, access and egress a motor vehicle.

Eligibility

The Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Treatment Center is responsible for determining veteran eligibility for issue, replacement or repair of prosthetic appliances, sensory aids, medical equipment, and medical supplies. Under current VA regulations, the following persons are eligible for rehabilitative appliances:

• Veteran beneficiaries requiring prosthetic appliances for a service-connected condition;
  
• Veterans who have a compensable service-connected disability;
  
• Any veteran of the Mexican Border Period or World War I;
  
• Any veteran who is a former prisoner of war;
  
• Any veteran undergoing vocational rehabilitation;
  
• Any blind veteran who is eligible for VA disability compensation may be provided equipment for aiding them in overcoming the handicap of blindness;
  
• Any veteran hospitalized or receiving VA outpatient care; and
  
• Any veterans followed by a VA physician.
