Summary and Conclusions
The Tampa VAMC Brain Injury Treatment Program is referred and treats TBI participants who are farther out post-injury than the national average patient (2 weeks longer). Despite that, TBI survivors treated at the Tampa VAMC have a higher gain in functioning across the rehabilitation stay (larger FIM gain), a higher level of functioning at discharge (discharge FIM scores), and have a higher rate of living in the community 3-months post-discharge compared with the private sector national average. In addition, Tampa VAMC participant and family satisfaction ratings exceed that of the national average. Finally, the average length of stay is a week and a half longer for TBI survivors treated at the Tampa VAMC, giving participants and families longer to adjust to and recovery from the brain injury and its effects. The following tables track over the past ten years Tampa VAMC's brain injury program outcomes compared to the private sector.
