Healthy Snacks

When it comes to snacking, consider this:  An extra 100 calories per day can lead to a 10 pound weight gain over the course of one year.  Remember calories are units of energy.  Unused energy is stored as body fat!  This means eating 100 calories less each day can lead to a 10 pound weight LOSS in one year.  Lower calorie snacks are better!!

It is best to keep snacks to 100 calories or less.  Make 200 calories your LIMIT for snacks.  Check out the Nutrition Facts label when shopping for snacks.  When reading food labels it is helpful to take note of the serving size.  Also look at the calorie level per serving.  Be aware of how much you are eating so you can stay under 200 calories.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Snacks under 100 calories
    • Popsicle
    • 7 animal crackers or 5 vanilla wafers
    • 1 cup sugar-free gelatin with 2 tablespoons whipped cream
    • ½ cup canned fruit in it's own juices with ¼ cup of low fat cottage cheese
    • ¾ ounce unsalted pretzels
    • ½ cup unsweetened applesauce
    • 3 cups of air popped popcorn
