Program Description

The VISN 8 Telephone Triage Program provides after-hours, weekend, and holiday coverage throughout Florida, South Georgia, and Puerto Rico.

Telephone triage is offered using standard, physician-authored protocols. All medical advice calls are answered by registered nurses. The purpose of the program is to provide extended access to veteran callers. The nurse determines what level of care is needed and provides advice/direction. The VISN 8 Telephone Triage program maintains a link with the daytime telephone care programs offered at all sites within VISN 8.

To ensure continuity of care, after you call the VISN 8 Telephone Triage Program for medical advice, staff will send a note to your primary care provider within VISN 8 to alert your provider regarding the content of the call.

The VISN 8 Telephone Triage staff is available to assist with pharmacy issues; for example, they may provide instruction in the use of the automated pharmacy prescription refill system.  If you are in need of assistance with an urgent medication renewal, the VISN 8 Telephone Triage staff can send a note to your primary care provider.

VISN 8 Telephone Triage Patient Service Assistant staff can assist with confirmation of your appointment or answer general questions such as where you should report for a certain test you may have scheduled. They also have the ability to send a message to your primary care site if you have an urgent need to change an appointment.
