Albany VA Medical Center Albany, the capital of New York State, is located on the west bank of the Hudson River, approximately 150 miles north of New York City. It is included in the "Capital District" along with Schenectady and Troy, encompassing four counties with a population of over 600,000. Albany serves as a major seaport and transportation center offering diverse opportunities in many areas.

Quality homes and apartments are available within commuting distance of the medical center. Prices are consistent with those found in cities of comparable size.

Schools
Excellent primary and secondary facilities are provided by public and private systems. Over 30 post-secondary institutions are located within 60 miles, including the State University of New York at Albany, Union College, College of St. Rose.

Cultural Activities
Local events are scheduled throughout the year. The Capital District hosts the New York State Museum, the New York State Theatre Institute, the Albany Symphony Orchestra, the Capital Repertory Company and a number of galleries and historical sites. The Saratoga Performing Arts Center is the summer residence of the New York City Ballet and other international artists perform with the Lake George Opera Company.

Recreation
An array of year-round outdoor activities abound. Fishermen and water enthusiasts will find miles of lakes, ponds and streams throughout the area. Hiking and biking trails, golf courses, tennis courts, parks and general recreational areas are plentiful. New York boasts the most skiing slopes in the nation with the state's largest at Gore Mountain. Close by are dozens of New England ski resorts. Cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing and ice-skating provide additional winter sporting opportunities.

Transportation
Recognized as the "Crossroads of the East," Albany is a major transportation center with excellent interstate highways and air, rail and bus services, facilitating travel to all surrounding areas. Interstate 87 is the primary north/south arterial, connecting Albany to the New York State Thruway for travel west and south and Interstate 90 east to the Massachusetts Turnpike.
