Bath VA Medical Center

Medical Center Description

Bath VAMC The Bath VA Medical Center began as a New York State Soldiers and Sailors Home. Initial funding for its creation was generated through a public appeal initiated by the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in the 1870s. The first corner stone was laid June 23, 1877 and the first member veterans sat down to a Christmas dinner in 1878. The state facility, which had a peak population of 2,143 in 1907, was turned over to the federal government in May of 1929 and in 1930 became part of the Veterans Administration.

A Military and Medicine Museum containing artifacts dating back to 1776 is maintained on the grounds to honor the facility's long history. A National Cemetery with roots dating back to the Civil War is also located on the Medical Center grounds. The Bath National Cemetery remains open for burials today, its sister, the Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira remains open for crematory remains only.

The Bath VA Medical Center is dedicated to providing comprehensive quality health care services to veterans of the Finger Lakes Region and the Southern Tier of New York State. Primary and secondary services are provided in outpatient and inpatient settings. Inpatient care includes acute medicine, as well as community living center and a domiciliary. Community Based Outpatient Clinics are established in Elmira, NY (Chemung County) and Wellsville, NY (Allegany County) to provide timely and convenient quality health care services for our veterans in those areas.

The Bath VA Medical Center is a member of the Central Steuben Rural Health Network, a collaborative system of local hospitals and community agencies serving the Greater Bath area. Together, we address the critical needs of preventive health care and education, primary care and aging services. The Medical Center is academically affiliated with the University of Rochester School of Medicine, Tufts University of Dentistry, and numerous other schools of nursing and allied health.
