Inpatient and Domiciliary
Behavioral Health Care provides a continuum of services for veterans with serious mental illnesses or chronic substance abuse problems who need more support than can be found in the community.
Acute Inpatient Psychiatry
Veterans who need individual intensive crisis oriented assessment and intervention for the treatment of their mental illness or substance abuse problem may be admitted to the inpatient psychiatry programs within VISN 2. These programs provide the veteran an individualized care plan delivered by a multidisciplinary team of mental healthcare professionals including psychiatrists, social workers, nursing, dieticians, recreational therapists, and Chaplains. Each unit also has access to primary and specialty medical service; or specialty substance abuse and behavioral health programs to support the delivery of a holistic model of care.
The inpatient team works with the veteran and his/her families to reduce psychiatric symptomatology; to restore the veteran's ability to function independently; to facilitate the development of skills to reduce the need for readmission in the future; and to develop an outpatient linkage to support the veteran's further recovery. Inpatient treatment stays are relatively short 3-10 days and are supplemented with referral services in the outpatient continuum of care.

Domiciliary Care
Veterans who are not in need of acute psychiatric programs but who have chronic problems related to substance use, homelessness and/or vocational rehabilitation and can benefit from a residential program may be eligible for treatment in the VISN 2 Behavioral Health Domiciliary Care. Founded on a model of biopsychosocial rehabilitation, the program provides each veteran with a comprehensive individualized assessment and treatment plan that addresses substance use, vocational skills, daily living skills, medication management, and intrapersonal skill building. The multidisciplinary staff works with the veteran within the therapeutic residential milieu to facilitate development and rehearsal of functional behaviors to replace the dysfunctional habits underlying the veteran's chronic problems in maintaining independent living.
The average length of stay for veterans in the domiciliary programs is three to six months. Referrals to the Dom are screened by the treatment team to ensure veterans accepted into the program are psychiatrically and medically stable.
