About Canandaigua, New York
Canandaigua has a unique
combination of
scenic beauty
and small town charm. The name
Canandaigua is derived from
the Native
American word
“Kanandarque” which means
“chosen spot.” It was originally the
site of the principle village of the
Seneca Indians. In 1789, the first
white settlers laid out the town of
Canandaigua at the foot of the 16-
mile long Canandaigua Lake.
Once organized as a district,
Canandaigua became a township in
1791. The village incorporated
within the town in 1815 and became
a city in 1913.
Canandaigua boasts a pristine
lake, lush green rolling hills, and
vast forests. It offers spectacular
and breathtaking seasons throughout
the year. Visitors come to
Canandaigua for a variety of
reasons. Many come to snow/water
ski, swim, boat or bike.
Canandaigua is host to many
attractions including Sonnenberg
Gardens - a beautiful Victorian
mansion and gardens, Granger
Homestead, Roseland Water Park,
numerous bed and breakfasts,
camps, and cottages.
Because Canandaigua is only a
half-hour drive from downtown
Rochester, there is a vast array of
nearby activities including: the
Auditorium Center Theatre, GEVA
Theatre, Memorial Art Gallery,
Rochester Museum and Science
Center, Rochester Philharmonic
Orchestra, Strong Museum, the
Finger Lakes Race Track, several
professional sports teams and
community festivals.
