Hospital Services
Pharmacy Service
Inpatient Pharmacy:
Inpatient pharmacy service is part of your treatment
team and is available to all hospitalized patients.
Pharmacists are available to provide medication
counseling to you, your physician/provider, and
hospital staff. Pharmacists will provide medication
information such as dosage and possible side effects
or make suggestions for different drugs to best treat
your condition. They will review your prescribed
medications with you before you are discharged
from the hospital.
Outpatient Pharmacy:
The outpatient pharmacy is located in the basement
building 1. The outpatient pharmacy
is responsible for outpatients only. The hours of
operation are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The
pharmacy can be contacted at (585) 393-7122.
New prescriptions are filled following your hospitalization
or outpatient clinic visit. For prescription
renewal/medication refills, we recommend that you
use the mail-out prescription service. Sign your
name to the medication insert mailed to you with the
medication. Mail your prescription renewal to the
Canandaigua VA Medical Center at 400 Fort Hill
Avenue, Canandaigua, NY 14424.
TRICARE patients must use approved TRICARE pharmacies.
Pastoral Care and Services
The Chaplain section provides religious and spiritual coverage to our veterans and their families. Chaplains are generally available from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and are on call evenings and nights. Chaplain offices are located in the basement of Bldg. #8, Room 13.
Catholic Chapel is in Bldg. #3
Protestant Chapel is in Bldg. #36
Jewish Chapel is in Bldg. #34
Muslim prayer room is in Bldg. #9
A schedule of worship services is posted on
each ward and available in the chaplain office.
Communion and other sacraments are available
bedside and upon special request.
Hoptel Room
The hoptel is located in building 6. It is designed
to provide family members of our veteran patients
accommodations when traveling a long distance
from home. The hoptel can also accommodate in a
snowstorm emergency. Any outpatient traveling a
long distance to Canandaigua or Rochester may
take advantage of the hoptel. You may call (585)
393-7251 or (585) 393-7540 to request hoptel
accommodations.
Voluntary Services
The VA Voluntary Service (VAVS) is a program in
which individuals and community groups voluntarily
contribute their time and resources to benefit
hospitalized veterans. Volunteers from various
community organizations are a vital part of our
health care team. Volunteers serve patients directly
by writing letters, providing craft items, escorting
patients, as well as a host of other services. Activities
such as bingo parties and recreational activities are
sponsored throughout the week. An activity
schedule is posted on each patient care unit.

DAV Transportation
The Canandaigua DAV Transportation Network
is available for your transportation needs. This
Network provides transportation for veterans who
would otherwise be unable to reach the Canandaigua
VA Medical Center. You must be a veteran to use
the service. A two-week notification is requested,
as donated vans and volunteer drivers provide
the service. Without prior notice, drivers and/or
vehicles may not be readily available.
Canteen Services (Food Service/Retail Store)
The Canteen offers cafeteria facilities, retail sales,
photo developing, and a wide range of catalog
services for the care and convenience of the patients.
The Canteen is located in building 4 on the
ground floor. Hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30
a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The retail store is closed on weekends
and holidays.
The cafeteria is also located in building 4 on the
ground floor. The cafeteria offers a varied menu
including daily specials. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00

Vending areas are open 24 hours daily.
Patients on a special diet should refrain from eating in the Cafeteria or from the vending machines.
Vending Machines
Vending areas are located throughout the facility
with the main vending area in building 2, basement.
Other locations include building 1 (outpatient
area), and building 36, basement.
Barber Service
The barbershop is located in the building 4,
basement. Hours are from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
on Wednesday and Thursday. The barbershop phone number is
(585) 393-7653. Barber service is also available
on the wards. Please contact your Patient Services Assistants to
arrange an appointment for you.
Canteen Books
Canteen books, which are redeemable for merchandise
sold in the cafeteria, retail store, and barber,
are available for patients that want to keep money
available and not worry about loss. Should an
inpatient require extra financial assistance with his/
her needs, the Patient Advocate may be able to
provide canteen books.
Newspapers
Newspapers can be purchased in the retail store.
Patient Education
Patient education is an important part of recovery
from any illness. To help keep you healthy, the
Education Department offers a variety of programs
for patients such as, diabetic classes, nutrition
classes, and support groups. Please ask your nurse
for more information on all education classes and
educational material available.
Computer Center
A patient computer room is located in building 8,
basement, room 10.
Internet Information (World Wide Web)

Our website provides all types of information, with new articles being added regularly, including Veteran Services: Frequently Asked Questions. The mission of our website is to make it easier for veterans to access updated and accurate information about VA Healthcare Network Upstate New York and VA Healthcare programs.
Library
Magazines and paperback books are provided for
patient use in each day- room. A library cart with
paperback books and magazines visit each patient
unit once a week. Books are delivered upon your
request. The library staff is on duty Monday
through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
building 9, room 13. Additional materials, including
"talking books" for the visually impaired, may be
requested.
Release of Information/Correspondence
Release of all medical information (labs, x-rays,
hospital records, disability and/or insurance forms)
must first be referred through the Release of Information
Clerk. Medical information can only be
released with your consent and upon receipt of your
written authorization. If you desire the release of
any medical information about your care, please
contact the Release of Information Clerk located in
the building 4 Basement, across from the canteen.
Absentee Voting
Hospitalized veterans who wish to vote in a general
election may do so by completing an application for
an absentee ballot during the prescribed time
frame. Patients needing an application or additional
information should contact the Patient Services
Assistant (PSA).
Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD)
This Medical Center is equipped with telecommunications
devices for the deaf (TDD). There is a
TDD telephone located in the building 37 basement,
in the operator's room.
Seeing Eye Dogs and Service Dogs
Seeing eye dogs and service dogs are raised and
trained to assist the physically disabled person.
Individuals depend on these dogs for security
and confidence. If you have a seeing eye dog or a
service dog and wish to have it visit with you,
please contact your nurse manager to make the
appropriate arrangements.
