Hospital Services
Automatic Teller Machine (ATM)
For your convenience, an Automatic Teller Machine
(ATM) is located on the ground floor near the
auditorium.
Food Court and Retail Store
The canteen offers a food court, retail sales and a wide range of catalog services for
the care and convenience of the patients. Visitors
and staff are welcome too. The retail store is located
on the ground floor, room CG26, across from the
food court. Store hours are Monday through Friday
from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. The store is closed on
weekends and holidays.
The food court is located on the ground floor in
room CG25, across from the retail store. It offers a
varied menu and daily specials. Hours are Monday
through Friday from 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Breakfast
is served from 7:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Lunch is served
from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. The food court is closed
on weekends and holidays.
Canteen Books
Canteen books are available for patients to use
during their hospital stay. They can be used to
purchase items sold in the canteen/food court and
retail store. Patients and
families are encouraged to buy the books instead
of keeping money at the bedside. Canteen books
can be purchased in the retail store office. The store
office is on the ground floor, room CG38. Should
a patient need extra financial assistance, please
arrange a meeting with the unit social worker.
Barber Service
Barber service is available on the units to
hospitalized veterans. Please contact your unit
clerk to arrange an appointment.
Vending Machines
The vending machine area is located on the ground
floor in room CG25A, next to the entrance of the
food court. It is open 24 hours a day. A change
machine and a U.S. postage stamp machine are
also provided in this area.
DAV Transportation
The Syracuse DAV Transportation Network is
available to provide transportation to veterans for
their VA medical appointments. This network of
the Disabled American Veterans provides transportation
for veterans who would otherwise be
unable to reach the Medical Center. The DAV
Hospital Service Coordinator is located on the first
floor in the Veterans Service Center, room A168B,
or by calling (315) 425-4352. You must call ahead
to schedule a pickup.
Guide Dogs and Service Dogs
Guide dogs and service dogs are raised and
trained to help the physically disabled person.
Individuals depend on these dogs for security and
confidence. If you have a working dog and require
its assistance during your stay, please contact
your Nurse Manager.
Health Touch
Health Touch is an interactive education center. It provides current information on medications, disease topics, lifestyle issues, wellness, and nutrition. The computer system features a simple, interactive, touch-screen system that is easy to use. Health Touch is located in the main lobby on the Ground Floor.

Interpreter Services
Interpreter services for deaf and speech-impaired
veterans are available. Please contact a member of
your health care team to arrange for interpreter
assistance.
Newspapers
Newspapers can be purchased from the machines
located on the ground floor next to the elevators.
Pastoral Care and Services
VA Chaplains provide religious care to all patients
and their families. The service includes Catholic,
Jewish and Protestant chaplains.
Through religious guidance and counseling,
chaplains motivate and invite meaningful use of
the patient's beliefs and attitudes in the management
of his/her illness.
Patient care takes a holistic approach, which
includes support for the seriously ill, surgical
patients, the dying patient and family, as well as
bereavement counseling. Chaplains visit the unit
regularly and are available for private consultation.
Chaplains may also help with advance directives.

Hours for worship services, sacraments, and
ordinances are as followed in the Interfaith
Chapel. The Interfaith Chapel is located on the
first floor, room B108.

Patient Education
Patient education is an important part of recovery,
management of illness, and maintaining wellness. To
help keep you healthy, the education department
offers a variety of programs for patients such as
classes in diabetes, nutrition, wellness, and support
groups. Please ask a member of your health care
team for more information about all of the classes
and educational materials available.
Patient Education Center
The Patient Education Center is located
on the first floor across from the elevators. The Education Center
is devoted to patient health education and general
resources. It can provide you with information
about your health, disease, diagnosis, medication,
surgical procedures, etc. You can read/consult
reference books and materials, view videos, and
get printed information/ pamphlets to take home
with you.
Patient Computer Room
A Patient Computer Room is located on the Ground Floor, Room CG35. The room has personal computers for word processing only. PC experience is required for independent use of this service.
Pharmacy Services
Inpatient Pharmacy:Pharmacy service is part of your health care team. It
is available to all hospitalized patients. Pharmacists are
available to provide medication counseling to you,
your provider, and hospital staff. Pharmacists will
provide medication information such as dosage
and possible side effects, or make suggestions for
different drugs to best treat your condition. They
are available to review your medications with you
before you are discharged from the hospital.
Outpatient Pharmacy:Outpatient pharmacy service is available to veteran
patients with a prescription written by a VA doctor.
Veterans using the TRICARE health plan must use
a TRICARE pharmacy. The VA is not a TRICARE
pharmacy. The outpatient pharmacy is located on
the first floor, room B107. Hours are Monday through Friday
from 8:00 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. Pharmacy services on weekends and holidays are limited to discharge prescriptions and Emergency Department prescriptions.
New prescriptions are filled following your discharge
from the hospital and after outpatient clinic visits.
Please remember to refill your prescription no later
than 14 days before the medication will run out.
There are 3 ways to request medication refills:
- By mail - sign your name to the medication refill
insert slip provided with the medication. Mail
your prescription renewal to the Syracuse VA
Medical Center at 800 Irving Avenue, Syracuse,
NY 13210. We recommend that you use the
mail-out prescription service.
- By phone - dial 1-800-792-4434 extension 56505 or (315) 425-6505 to reach the
refill line. You will need to enter
your social security number and prescription
number as the automated phone directs you.
- In person - drop off the medication refill slip at
the pharmacy window right after receiving the
medication or any time you are in the hospital.
Release of Information (ROI)
Medical information can only be released with
your consent and upon receipt of your written
authorization. The release of all medical information
(medical records, x-rays, disability/insurance
forms, etc.) to another physician/provider, or
other party, must first be referred to Release of
Information. ROI is available to inpatients and
outpatients. If you want to release any medical
information about your care, contact your health
care team. The ROI office is located on the
ground floor, room AG19, across from the elevators
or by dialing (315) 425-4400 extension 52005.
Shuttle Services
Shuttle services are available to veterans who require
health care services at this facility from the Rome
and Binghamton community based outpatient clinics.

Speech, Hearing, and Swallowing
The Audiology (hearing) and Speech Pathology department offers a full range of services for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of speech, language, hearing, voice, cognitive, and swallowing disorders. The services include, but are not limited to, speech and swallowing evaluation and retraining, and evaluation of hearing loss and hearing aid use. Audiology and Speech Pathology is located on the Ground Floor in Room AG20A. Or dial (315) 425-2437.
Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD)
The Syracuse VA Medical Center is equipped with a Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD). The TDD telephone is located in human resources on the ground floor, room BG14. Ask your health care team for help with this service.
Television
Cable television is available at each bedside and
clinics 24 hours a day.
On-Demand Television Health
Information Programming
See a health information video or take a customer
service survey by "dialing" them up at your bedside
or in the clinic waiting area. This video information
is available by tuning your television to channels 40,
42, 44, 46, 48, 50 or by dialing 52094 on your phone.
If you need assistance, ask a member of your health
care team. *not available on 7 east.
Veterans Service Center (VSC)
The Veterans Service Center (VSC) is located on the first floor near the parking garage entrance to the Medical Center. The VSC provides one-stop shopping for veterans ranging from information on eligibility criteria to enrollment with the VA for health care services. The VSC provides assistance with updating insurance information, annual financial assessments, addresses or next of kin information. In addition, VSC staff is available to answer questions concerning co-payments, billing issues, special eligibility programs or general questions concerning services within the Medical Center. For additional information please call the VSC Call Center at 1-888-823-9656 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. or (315) 425-4400 extension 53209 or 53227, after hours.
Voluntary Services
The Department of Veterans Affairs Voluntary
Service (VAVS) is a program in which individuals
and community groups voluntarily give their time
and resources to benefit veterans in the inpatient
and outpatient areas.
VAVS volunteers help with a variety of tasks
throughout the Medical Center. Volunteers assist
with transportation to tests, shopping, letter
writing, and other personal services. In special
circumstances, VAVS will provide toiletries and
comfort items to those patients in need. The goal
of the VAVS is to provide these and other services
to make your hospital stay more comfortable. The
VAVS office is located on the ground floor, room
CG37, near the auditorium. Hours are Monday
through Friday from 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. VAVS
can be reached by dialing extension 54317.
