The Syracuse VA Medical Center, part of the VA Healthcare Network Upstate New York, is an acute care facility located at the geographic center of New York State. It is adjacent to State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University and Syracuse University.

The medical center provides acute medical and surgical services, acute mental health, rehabilitative medicine and intensive care. In addition, it has a 48-bed community living center unit that provides short-term transitional care.

The medical center offers a vast array of outpatient specialty services, in addition to primary care. Some of the specialty services include emergency medicine, cardiology, hematology/ oncology, women’s health, geriatric medicine and behavioral health. Diagnostic services are equally extensive and include, state of the art angiography, nuclear medicine, MRI, and CT scan capability. Syracuse is a “Center of Excellence” for neurosurgery and urological renal stone treatment.

Syracuse doctor speaking with patient The research and development service at the Syracuse VA Medical Center supports a comprehensive medical research program. Research studies include 95 protocols that focus on diabetes, motor control, drug dependence, schizophrenia, heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, infectious diseases, cancer and leukemia, bladder disease, ulcer disease, and telemedicine. Annual funding totals more than $2.5 million. The Research Program is fully accredited by the National Commission of Quality Assurance (NCQA) and other bodies.

The program maintains an ongoing relationship with Clarkson University in the area of Rehabilitation Medicine. The research and development service at Syracuse is affiliated with the Central New York Research Corporation (CNYRC).

The CNYRC is a not-for-profit research corporation that manages the non-VA research funds. Funding is derived from such sources as the National Institutes of Health, charitable trusts and foundations, pharmaceutical companies, and medical equipment manufacturers.

The Syracuse VA Medical Center is academically affiliated with the SUNY Upstate Medical University. It provides education to medical students, residents and fellows. In addition, allied health professions such as radiology, medical technology, physical and occupational therapy are using the VA staff as their faculty for their programs. The Syracuse VA has eight affiliated nursing education programs and a physician assistant externship with LeMoyne College. A long-standing educational partnership exists with Syracuse University where audiology, speech pathology and social work students receive their field experience at the VA. A “New Vision Program” has been in place for over 15 years, where high school students spend four hours a day, five days per week at VA, learning about health care delivery and potential careers.

The Syracuse VA Medical Center has eight community based outpatient clinics (CBOC), serving veterans in 18 counties in Central New York. Clinics have been established in Auburn, Binghamton, Carthage, Cortland, Ithaca, Massena, Oswego, and Rome. These VA outpatient clinics serve an integral role in the provision of expanded primary and preventive medical services.

The goal of the Syracuse VA Medical Center is to better coordinate functions and services to meet the needs of veterans. Syracuse VA Voluntary Service helps in this mission by promoting VA volunteerism, accepting monetary donations and goods from service organizations and the community at large.
