About the Medical Center
The Syracuse VA Medical Center is a tertiary
care facility located at the geographic center of
New York State. It is adjacent to State University
of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University
and Syracuse University. The Medical Center
provides acute medical and surgical services,
acute mental health, rehabilitative medicine, and
intensive care. It has a 50-bed community living center that
provides short-term transitional care.
The Medical Center offers a vast array of
outpatient specialty services, in addition to
primary care. They include emergency medicine,
cardiology, hematology/oncology, women’s health,
geriatric medicine, and behavioral health.
The research and development service at the
Syracuse VA supports a comprehensive medical
research program. Over 40 researchers are
investigating areas such as diabetes, drug
dependence, heart disease, cancer, bladder
disease, and telemedicine.
The Syracuse VA is academically affiliated
with SUNY Upstate Medical University. It
provides education to medical students, residents
and fellows. A long-standing educational
partnership exists with Syracuse University
where audiology, speech pathology and social
work students receive their field experience at
the VA.
Syracuse VA operates eight communitybased
outpatient clinics in: Massena, Watertown,
Oswego, Rome, Auburn, Cortland, Ithaca, and
Binghamton providing primary care and mental
health services to the veterans who live in the 18
counties of Central New York.
