Medication interactions with warfarin (Coumadin®)
Many drugs interfere with warfarin. Make sure you notify all of your health care providers that
you are taking warfarin so they will know which medications can be prescribed for you. It is also
important to notify your VA Coumadin Clinic with any changes in your medications or prior to starting
any new medications.
How should I store my warfarin
(Coumadin®)
Keep your warfarin in the container it came in,
tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store
it at room temperature and away from light.
Over the counter medications
You may take these nonprescription
medications
with warfarin (Coumadin®):
acetaminophen (Tylenol®)
Chlor-Trimeton®
Contac®
Drixoril®
*Maalox®
*Mylanta®
Robitussin® Cough Syrup
Sudafed®
Tylenol Cold and Sinus®
You may not take these nonprescription
medications with warfarin (Coumadin®)
without your health care provider’s approval:
Alka-Seltzer®
aspirin (Bayer®, Bufferin®, Ecotrin®)
Excedrin®
ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®)
Naproxen (Naprosyn®, Aleve®)
Nyquil Cold®
Pepto-Bismol®
*Note: If you use antacids, such as Maalox® or
Mylanta®, take them at least two hours before or
two hours after taking your warfarin.
