Home Computer Security   Like any good old Western film set on the frontier, the Internet has its own cast of thieves, outlaws, and desperadoes to be wary of. Computer "hackers" try to break into networked servers to compromise computer security, locate personal information, or cause computer crashes.

Now there is a new threat. The increasing popularity of "always on" home networks, connected to the Internet with cable or DSL, gives these masked cyber-bandits easier access to wagonloads of new information to plunder.

A feature on Home Network Security at the CERT Coordination Center* at Carnegie Mellon University provides an excellent background on the problem, and straight-shooting advice on how to steer hackers clear of ambushing your computer.
