Homeless Veterans Treatment Programs
(888) 725-3000
The Community Support Services Program (CSS) uses work to normalize the lives of homeless veterans. CSS serves veterans who are homeless and have a medical, mental health or substance use disorder. Structured so that that the specialized homeless and work programs are combined, CSS provides outreach, crisis intervention and case management services as well as housing and vocational services. A transitional residence for veterans in supported employment will open in the near future. This will promote clean and sober living in a family like environment for veterans who formerly resided in city shelters.
Homeless veterans in the supported employment program earn approximately $1000 per month in a full-time work experience, generally on the campus of the medical center. Many of these veterans live in shelters and may have only one month of documented sobriety. Group therapy and case management are provided to assist these veterans as they prepare to return to community employment. Because they are earning an income and are able to save during their six months in the program, homeless veterans have housing options other than the scarce subsidized settings. Homeless veterans with little sobriety and stability are fully integrated in the Mental Health Patient Care Center on site. Treatment for PTSD, substance abuse, and other mental health problems is available.
This arrangement provides integrated care to veterans with co-occurring disorders. For example, veterans relapsing in the work program can immediately enter the substance abuse program and veterans needing psychiatric care can easily access the outpatient mental health program. The CSS Program is fully accredited by CARF, the Rehabilitation Accreditation Agency.
