Peters VA Medical Center was awarded both the New York Blood Center's Outstanding Achievement Award for 2006 AND the Bronx Borough President's 2006 Hospital Award.

Shawn Kingston, Staff Assistant in the Office of the Medical Center Director, represented the Medical Center at the event and administers the James J. Peters Blood Drive Program. The awards were presented to MaryAnn Musumeci, the Medical Center Director, following the ceremony. Speaking about the accomplishment, Musumeci said, "Thanks in large part to Shawn's organizational skills, we have had a lot of success increasing our donor numbers over these last few years. Our Medical Center is one of the most caring and generous facilities in the area and our employees have really stepped up for those in need. I am very proud of them."

The New York Blood Center reports that area blood supplies are at historic lows since September 11th. They encourage local businesses and medical facilities in the area to develop blood drive programs. The James Peters Blood Drive Program has more than tripled the number of donors since early 2000. Both awards noted that the James Peters Medical Center program surpassed both the quantity donated and the percentage of increase among ALL Bronx County-based facilities.
