Services and Benefits
Each of the Regional Offices can provide you information on the services and benefits available to Veterans. For each of the services and benefits listed below, you can apply in person or by mail to the Regional Office for your state. You can also receive benefit counseling over the phone or in person. Female Veterans can request to speak with female counselors. For more information, contact your local Regional Center.
Disability Benefits
The Veterans Benefits Administration provides benefits to disabled Veterans. Veterans with disabilities related to service receive compensation benefits. Veterans who served during a period of war and who have disabilities not related to service can receive pension benefits. The Veterans Benefits Administration also has the authority to grant benefits for disability resulting from personal assault.
Vocational Rehabilitation
Veterans with service-connected disabilities can receive vocational rehabilitation benefits, focused at helping Veterans to overcome employment barriers created by their disabilities.
Loan Guarantee
The Veterans Benefits Administration guarantees a portion of a Veteran's mortgage, enabling a Veteran to buy a home with little or no down payment.
Education Benefits
The Veterans Benefits Administration provides education benefits to Veterans. All benefits expire 10 years after the Veteran's discharge from the military. Since the early 1980s, basic eligibility requires that the Veteran made contributions to the education fund while in the military.
For New York Veterans, access to these benefits is available through the New York Office, but the claim is processed in Buffalo, New York. The toll free education number is 1-888-442-4551, Monday - Friday, from 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM.
Insurance Benefits
Veterans can convert their Servicemembers Group Life Insurance to Veterans Group Life Insurance. Other life insurance programs are also available to disabled Veterans. General information is available through the New York Office. Specific information and claims processing is done at the Regional Office and Insurance Center, Box 8079, Philadelphia, PA 19101. The toll free number is 1-800-669-8477, from 8:30 AM - 6:00 PM.
Assistance for Homeless Veterans
The Newark Regional Office works with other agencies in a Transitional Housing Program Veterans Haven. This program uses one large building, plus seven cottages on state property in Winslow, NJ. For more information, call Veterans Haven at 609-561-0269. The best to call is from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, or 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. You can also call the Regional Office and ask to speak to the Homeless Coordinator on Monday through Friday, from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Walk-ins okay.
The New York Regional Office operates a Day Treatment Center for homeless Veterans and assists Veterans in locating shelter and housing. The Center is located at 312 West 36th Street and is open Monday - Friday, from 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM. You can reach the Center at (212) 239-3063.
