The Baltimore GRECC provides training in geriatrics and gerontology to Baltimore VA Medical Center staff, associated academic partners, and other facilities in the network. GRECC is a major contributor to education of medical, nursing, associated health trainees, and other students, pre-clinical through post-graduate. The GRECC formal training programs include: Geriatric Medicine fellowship (Drs. May and Blumenthal); VA Advanced Geriatric Fellows and Physician Fellows (Drs. Blumenthal and Ryan); Palliative Care Fellowship collaboration with Geriatrics & Extended Care (GEC) and Johns Hopkins (Dr. Wertheimer); Robotics in aging and disability internships for high school through post-doctoral training (Dr. Macko). Baltimore GRECC serves as an educational resource both locally and more broadly, sponsoring regular symposia and VA nationwide webinars. Educational activities are coordinated with geriatrics educational activities supported by University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) Organized Research Center on Aging Geriatrics (ORC), Gerontology Education and Research program (GEAR, an inter-professional program at UMB) and research, education and training programs sponsored by the University of Maryland Exercise and Robotics Center of Excellence (MERCE), and the Mid-Atlantic Nutrition and Obesity Research Center (NORC).

  Clinical

Clinical activities of Baltimore GRECC are quite varied and reflect the multi-disciplinary nature of GRECC clinical faculty. GRECC geriatric medicine fellows' longitudinal clinics, two GRECC dementia clinical and geriatric assessment clinics are integrated into the new GeriPACT located at the Loch Raven campus in Geriatrics and Extended Care (GEC) service line. All GRECC clinical activities have strong interdisciplinary team participation, including psychiatry, psychology, mental health, pharmacy, and social work. The GRECC also has a Geriatric Evaluation & Managment Unit service and geriatric consult team at the Baltimore VA Medical Center. GRECC physicians attend on the inpatient medical wards, outpatient rheumatology, nephrology, geriatric stroke and neurology, and neurology consult services where they educate a broad variety of trainees. Current Baltimore GRECC clinical demonstration projects include: Gerofit (Katzel); Exercise and Brain Health (Macko); Interactive Exercise Tele-rehabilitation (IVET) (Hafer-Macko/Macko); Renal Interdisciplinary Safety Clinic (Fink/Blumenthal); Tele-gerofit (National Gerofit Enterprise) (Katzel) and Assisted early mobility for hospitalized older Veterans (STRIDE) (Beamer).
