Eastern Colorado GRECC
The Eastern Colorado GRECC has been serving older Veterans since 2014.
Research Focus Areas
Consequences and Treatment of Obesity in Older Adults
Gender Differences in Health (Focusing on Women's Health)
Palliative Care and End of Life Decision-Making
ResearchThe research focus of the Eastern Colorado GRECC (ECHS) includes the consequences and treatments of obesity in Veterans, gender differences in health care with special emphasis on bone health and architecture, rehabilitation following knee replacement or amputation and palliative care/end-of-life decision-making. Additionally, the Eastern Colorado GRECC is working with implementation research professionals to develop decision aides in cardiology and other areas. The use of Veteran Engagement Groups to help focus research activities is planned. Lastly, the implementation of a Joint Grand Rounds with the GRECC, COIN and MIRECC provides a platform for research collaboration.
Education at the ECHCS GRECC is focused primarily on clinical professionals. Based on surveyed areas of interest including aging Veterans particularly in rural settings and palliative care, the GRECC has established aging and palliative care SCAN-ECHO programs that reach several hundred clinicians in several VISNs across the US. The programs are extremely successful based on participant surveys and attendance. ECHCS GRECC is also focused on its Geriatric Medicine and Advanced Geriatric Research Fellowship programs. Working in conjunction with the University of Colorado, the fellowships include rotations in geriatric medicine, community living center, State Veterans Home, palliative care, and emphasize research topics in rehabilitation and implementation science among others. Additionally, the ECHCS GRECC is conducting in-depth evaluations of its education, clinical demonstrations and research projects. For example, exit interviews with fellows are conducted to explore training satisfaction and solicit feedback for program improvement. Research analyses are performed to track career trajectories, publication placement and frequency of citation and clinical activities are evaluated based on change in practice by attendees.
Clinical demonstration projects include Primary Palliative Care SCAN-ECHO, Geriatric SCAN-ECHO, in-home video telehealth for Veterans with ALS and the interdisciplinary tele-geriatrics/dementia clinic for rural based Veterans and their caregivers. Palliative care and advance care planning projects are also underway.
